It looks like home security systems in Memphis, Tennessee are more needed than ever before, if data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is any indication of the current crime rate there. The latest crime rate data reports ranked Memphis fifth among U.S. cities in terms of violent crime rate. The FBI report covered the first half of 2012.
In a report by Jane Donahoe of the Memphis Business Journal, Memphis’s violent crime rate was at 871.88 crimes per 100,000 residents. On a national level, only four cities were ahead of Memphis: Flint and Detroit in Michigan; St. Louis in Missouri; and Oakland in California. Some private camps blame loose gun laws for the proliferation of unlicensed and unregulated firearms and weapons, as well as the increase in the violent crime rate index.
Memphis is ranked 16th nationally in terms of crimes against property. Out of 100,000 residential and commercial establishments, over three thousand have fallen prey to criminals and criminal acts that include robbery, vandalism, etc. The figure, combined with the violent crime rate, boosted Memphis’s overall crime rate for the period.
The 2012 FBI data, which covered only metropolitan areas with residents of 100,000 or more, showed an over 12-percent increase in the violent crime rate. This is a considerable increase compared to the figure posted for the same period in 2011. This put Memphis in 60th place among a total of 267 metro areas covered by the FBI’s database.
The Neighborhood Scout, which provides enterprise grade data for prospective home buyers, backed the FBI findings. It estimated that Memphis has more than 53,000 violent and property crimes every year. It also listed Memphis most prevalent violent crimes as murder, rape, robbery. and assault. Neighborhood Scout also named motor vehicle theft, theft, and, burglary as the most prolific property crimes.
