People often go on vacations or leave their home for certain periods of time to do various activities. Upon leaving their houses, these people often fear that a burglar might break in and steal possessions they worked hard to own.
As no city is totally safe from crime, many homeowners have applied for home security systems in Memphis and other major American metros. An article published by Security Info Watch on May 13, 2013 details a study by the Alarm Industry Research and Education Foundation on alarm systems’ effect on burglary, and why every household should have these installed:
The report, “Understanding Decisions to Burglarize from the Offender’s Perspective,” examined the responses of 422 convicted male and female burglars across three states – North Carolina, Kentucky and Ohio.
According to the study, about 60 percent of burglars said that the presence of an alarm would cause them to seek an alternate target and more than 80 percent indicated that they would attempt to determine if an alarm was present before carrying out the crime. In fact, only one in 10 respondents said they would always attempt a burglary if an alarm was present, but more than 40 percent said that they would discontinue a burglary in progress if they discovered an alarm was present.
The study also assessed other factors on what would make burglars move to the next target, and the variation of those factors by gender. It also disclosed the motivation of these burglars as to why they commit these crimes.
The numbers offered by the institute is of great news to homeowners. Knowing that many burglars avoid houses equipped with home alarm systems can bring great relief and reassurance to homeowners who already have these installed, as well as encourage those who haven’t to get ones for themselves. This fact may have been contributed to a prediction, detailed by Security Info Watch three months later, that there will be continuous growth in the home security industry.
There are a lot of home security systems that families can choose from. These range from simple systems such as the electric circuit, to more technologically savvy ones such as sound alarms, motion detectors, and mobile systems.
Families interested in learning more about Memphis home security products should contact companies such as Frase Protection. They would be more than willing to help homeowners install one perfect for their needs.
